Civic movementsNo Kings
No Kings is a nationwide coalition of nonviolent demonstrations and community-organizing events focused on democratic accountability, limits on executive power, civil liberties, and fair elections. After large actions in 2025 and March 2026, organizers have announced βNo Kings: Vote Earlyβ events for October 17, 2026. Those events emphasize making a voting plan, checking registration, helping neighbors vote, and preparing nonpartisan election-protection efforts ahead of the November 3 midterms. Local events vary, and the coalition asks participants to act lawfully and de-escalate conflicts.
The debate: Supporters view the mobilizations as a defense of democratic checks and civic participation. Critics question whether a broad coalition with few specific policy demands can convert protest turnout into sustained results.

As of October 16, 2026: Defenders of Our Republic (DOOR) reported that Air Force Maj. Jason Watson was referred to a general court-martial on October 10. A February trial was discussed by defense counsel but has not been confirmed. Watson remains in pretrial confinement following charges associated with his public statements and other alleged military-rule violations; he has not been convicted in this case. His lawyer, Christopher Mutimer, reports that Watson has been isolated nearly 24 hours daily and argues that the confinement is excessively punitive. The legal concern includes Article 13 of the UCMJ, which bars unlawful pretrial punishment; whether his confinement violates that rule has not been determined by a court.
The case involves military charges arising from his public criticism of senior officials and related conduct. Military rules restrict officersβ political activity and contemptuous speech; his defense disputes aspects of the prosecution. An Article 32 hearing officer recommended dismissal of several specifications, but the case was nevertheless referred to trial.
